                                                                  IT’S ALL ABOUT SAFETY

“It’s all about safety” is a phrase used by just about everyone today. It is used to describe how an emergency was prevented or how an emergency was handled to prevent further injuries. In this fast paced world we live in, there are those we call on to help.  They are our team of professionals, who give their all to get the job done.  These professionals come from a long list. They are Fire, EMS, Prevention, Maintenance, Police, and the Office of Emergency Management.  Each part of the team does their part to ensure that the other departments run smoothly. It is amazing at how they all work together, directly and indirectly, to become the best at their job.
Fire, a First Responder division, is there to answer calls from car wrecks to any kind of fire and medical emergency you could imagine. Firefighters are willing to put their own safety second and enter a burning building to affect a rescue. The state of the art training is paralleled with state of the art equipment.  Continuous training allows firefighters to be ready when an emergency arises.
EMS is also a First Responder division, which handles problems from every realm of life. They aid in rescue, medical and backing up their brothers on the fire scene. The continuous training keeps our EMS providers on the cutting edge of patient care. EMS’ professionalism and efficiency save lives everyday.
Both departments work together to provide Advance Life Support, (ALS) and other services.  ALS Engine, ALS Ambulance, Hazardous Material, High Rise Rescue and Vehicle Extraction are all possible due to the continuing education these men and women receive everyday to ensure our city is safe.
Prevention is often a department that goes unnoticed but is equally as important. They enforce our fire codes and laws for public safety. Inspectors are always looking to make a building or area safe, by finding overlooked places which could result in fire or bodily harm. Laws are constantly changing, from building occupancy to automated suppression systems we as the public never see. It is the job of the Prevention department to make sure we are safe.
Maintenance is a job no one appreciates until something breaks. The men and women in this department are in charge of all our vehicles and buildings. The fire trucks, ambulances, police cars and any other vehicles are their responsibility. They make sure everything is in running order. It is an ongoing job that we often take for granted. The service and repair of vehicles and buildings is their pride.  The ongoing education of the equipment they service is an absolute necessity.
We are a team. One without the other makes the team as a whole ineffective. We educate our children on fire safety and what to do in an emergency, but we need to educate everyone that this is a job that requires everyone to work together.  The continuing educational requirements to keep us above a state minimum are invaluable.  We as a community should never settle for average.  It takes manpower, selflessness, and the community to keep us all safe. Education, equipment, personnel and a desire to be the best, is what will keep the loss of life and property to a minimum. What are we willing to sacrifice to save a dollar?

After all, it’s all about safety!
